Breaking Bannock, an initiative of the Gabriola Arts Council, has been honoured with a 2026 Islands Trust Community Stewardship Award in recognition of its Building Bridges initiative.

The award was announced by Islands Trust Council during its June 16–18 quarterly meeting. Breaking Bannock was one of only two organizations recognized this year for outstanding contributions that support the Islands Trust’s mandate to preserve and protect the Islands Trust Area while strengthening island communities.

The Building Bridges initiative was recognized for fostering meaningful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members through cultural learning, dialogue, and shared experiences. By creating opportunities for connection and understanding, Breaking Bannock continues to advance reconciliation and build a stronger, more inclusive Gabriola Island community.

“The future of the Islands Trust Area is shaped by people who step forward to protect what makes these islands extraordinary,” said Laura Patrick, Chair of Islands Trust Council. “This year’s recipients have shown remarkable leadership, commitment, and vision in caring for these lands, waters, ecosystems, and communities. Their contributions leave a lasting legacy, and Islands Trust Council is proud to recognize and celebrate their achievements.”

Recipients of the 18th Islands Trust Community Stewardship Awards will be recognized locally over the coming months.

Since the awards program began in 2002, Islands Trust Council has recognized individuals and organizations that demonstrate exceptional leadership in preserving and protecting the Islands Trust Area. The Community Stewardship Awards are presented once every four years.

The Breaking Bannock team extends its gratitude to Islands Trust Council for this honour and to the many Elders, Knowledge Keepers, artists, volunteers, partners, and community members whose generosity and participation have made the Building Bridges initiative possible.
