GCE presents: ‘Remember’

“The end of the year is a time of reflection, notes Gabriola Chamber Ensemble director Brad Shipley”; “a time to remember the year gone by, the people in our lives and the ones who have left us.”

And on that note, the hard-working members of Gabriola Chamber Ensemble are excited to present “Remember”; their 2016 Winter concert.

Quoting Stephen Chatman’s “Remember” – the song which sets forth the theme of the concert – Shipley says: “Better by far you should forget me and smile, than you should remember and be sad”.

Featuring Franz Schubert’s ‘Mass in G’, the concert will also include pieces by Dietrich Buxtehude, Tore W. Aaa, another song by Stephen Chatman, and selections by Antonio Vivaldi.

In “Mass in G”, Schubert’s second and most popular mass, the six movements proceed from the lyrical “Kyrie” to the passionate “Agnus Dei”.

The text follows the traditional Roman Catholic Mass, although according to Choral Conductor Dennis Shrock: “Unique to Schubert, portions of the Gloria and Credo texts in all the (six Latin) masses are varied: individual words are repeated, the standard order of phrases is interchanged, and, most striking, some words and phrases are deleted.”

A child prodigy, Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was just 18 when, in six days, he composed the Mass in G.

Stephen Johnson, of “Bright Young Things”, BBC Music Magazine, said of the teenage Franz Schubert: “(His) development to fully mature greatness was observed by few and valued as such by even fewer. But it is one of the most extraordinary stories in the history of music”.
