ICONIC Theatre Company presents a staged reading of two one-act plays – Hennessey Street and Hazel Speaks! Both plays were written by award-winning Washington author Rebecca Redshaw. Hennessey Street spotlights the lives of four generations of women whose ages range from 17 to 90 – lives that will stir the memories in all of us, with the hopes and dreams of the future embodied in one neighbourhood. Hazel Speaks! is a compilation of quotes from the biography of Hazel Wolf – an Audubon champion, activist, environmentalist and community leader, born in Victoria BC in 1898. With strong ties to the Northwest, Hazel lobbied in small town meetings and before the U.S. Congress for causes dear to her heart. Hazel lived to see three centuries before her death in 2000 at the age of 101 and through this play her ‘voice’ will resonate with anyone interested in today’s social, cultural and environmental issues.
The plays’ author, Rebecca Redshaw, will be in attendance on Friday and Saturday, November 4/5 and will invite the audience to participate in a Q&A following each performance. Rebecca is well known to Gabriola audiences who may recall two of her previous productions: Dear Jennifer and Four Women, performed on the island.
