Let your imagination travel with a pair of scissors, colourful paper and sticky glue.  Come experiment collage making through these three exercises, learn about composition, explore shades and values, have fun creating images on paper and wood blocks and take home your new piece of art.

Exercise 1:  Small collage on wood block – The material for your first collage has been collected and put inside an envelope. You may use as many elements you like, just make sure you play with your composition for a while before you commit to glue.

Exercise 2:  Play with words – You will be introduced to a table full of various magazines from which to get images and words, pick some carefully and others nonchalantly, gather a bit more than you need, spread it all and sort through.  Build your background, put some chosen images on top, don’t paste anything down just yet, incorporate words and sentences to your collage. When the image is right, take a picture and glue all the elements starting with the background and up.

Exercise 3:  Monochrome – The exercise and challenge of this collage is to create an image and tell a story using only the various shades and values of a dominant colour of your choice. Collect many images from magazines and  colourful tissue paper. Cut, arrange, rearrange, glue, pay attention to your image.  This exercise/collage is done on an 8”x10” cradle board.
