This workshop with Jennifer Manuel, author of The Heaviness of Things That Float, will teach you four powerful strategies for seeing your fiction through a new lens. By the end of the workshop, you will have concisely identified areas in your fiction that need work and will leave with practical solutions to improve your fiction immediately and significantly. Through examples and hands-on practice, you will learn to:
- Survey narrative real estate
- Map emotional terrain
- Measure narrative distance
- Mark places of narrative energy
Additionally, you will learn to:
- Boost energy at the right places using three innovative techniques: friction, torque, and illumination
- Use proportion to set the perfect pace and to signal significant story moments
- Vary the “camera lens” to make the reader feel intensely close to the story
- Shape the emotional terrain on the surface and below it, using subtext
