The lives of five 60+ women in a Vancouver Island seaside town intersect in moving, funny and unexpected ways in Western Edge Theatre’s When I’m 64.
Trish is a breast cancer survivor who has taken up dragonboating; Lotus is a “self-employed hippie” and big fan of personal development courses; Joan is an 86-year old shut-in widow with a long-withheld story to tell her daughter; Sonja is a newcomer to internet dating; and Alexandra is a big-city executive who uses her visits to Vancouver Island to even the score with her cheating husband. Change is in the air for each of them, as well as for one of the local “bag ladies,” whose home in a tent city is about to be torn down.
Grit and determination meet the realities of aging in this inspiring play, which previews on Gabriola Island at the Roxy Theatre (Twin Beaches Mall, 377 Berry Pt. Rd.) on Sept. 16 at 7:30 pm and Sept. 18 at 2:00 pm. Can’t catch it on Gabriola? It then moves to Nanaimo for performances at Harbour City Theatre (25 Victoria Rd., 10 minutes walk from the downtown ferry terminal) on Sept. 23, 24, 30, and Oct. 1 at 7:30 pm, with a matinee on Oct. 2 at 2 pm.
