Island Studies: West Coast Canada and Beyond

Island Studies Conference Image2013 Conference
By Islanders, For Islanders, About Islanders and Islands
May 10-12, 2013, The Haven, Gabriola Island, BC

Calling all West Coast BC Islanders and other people interested in the study of islands. We invite you to participate in a conference/forum/dialogue on the complex range of environmental, sociocultural, and economic challenges that are the daily reality for island communities on the West Coast of Canada, in the US, and elsewhere. Through our invitation, we offer a place and time to study, think, discuss, disseminate, hope, vision, and explore islands on their and our terms.

We welcome participation from scholars, intellectuals, activists, leaders, and other individuals in private enterprise, government, and community organizations who:

  •     Have a passion for island communities and sustainability or the study of islands and islanders
  •     Want to learn from other island experiences and overcome the challenges associated with islands
  •     Wish to network with like-minded and island-focused individuals.

We are planning for a wide range of participation, with the conference featuring more than 80 presenters including three invited speakers, a panel discussion followed by a wine and cheese event, a reader’s theatre performance, and a Saturday music event.
