The KGT Artist in Residency Program is going Musical!

Kasahara Gabriola Trust and the Gabriola Arts Council are seeking artist-in-residence applications from Canadian musicians working in a wide range of disciplines including songwriting, performance arts or music/sound production.

Artist residencies, specifically for musicians

  • June 1–30, 2024
  • September 1-30, 2024

Only one applicant will be chosen for each  residency period.

Sorry, the call for applications is now closed.

These music residencies provide the opportunity to freely explore music genres, ideas, writing, sound production, mixing, collaboration. We welcome interdisciplinary and crossover collaborations. Entirely self-directed and self-catered, the residency allows the flexibility to work as autonomously or collaboratively as desired following your own creative process.

This is a great opportunity for a focused respite from city life; whether to gather ideas, refine skills, research, experiment, grow or produce new work. Dream big, break free, and let your imagination run wild while waking up to a backdrop of wildlife and an ocean view each morning.

Explore your music within the Gabriola Island Community

Gabriola Island is one of the Southern Gulf Islands located in the Salish Sea and is a 20 minute ferry ride from Nanaimo located on Vancouver Island.

The accommodation is a private waterfront live/workspace house in an inspirational and intimate island setting, offering the opportunity for artists and musicians to create original work, build networks, reach new audiences and explore the different cultural influences on Gabriola.

The house is suitable for two people, but we do not accept joint applications. The successful artist may choose to bring their partner, child or art companion upon approval.

There is a piano at the house, available for your use. Aside from that, artists will have to bring all other equipment necessary for their residency or source it locally upon arrival.  There is no sound or recording equipment provided, but there is access to audio equipment by donation and photo/video equipment rental through the Gabriola Arts Council. Additionally, there are also many connections that can be made with the myriad of musicians here on Gabriola.

Artists are encouraged to utilize free exhibition/workshop/artist talk/performance space at Gabriola Arts & Heritage Centre during their residency.

Who is Toshiko Kasahara

Toshiko Kasahara came upon Gabriola Island almost by accident, acquiring the oceanfront property as repayment for a loan over 50 years ago. She and her husband dreamed of building on the property, but her husband died before they could realize it. Undaunted (at age 80) Toshiko built her house on the beach.

Her love of the island was matched by her love of the arts – all forms of art – from poetry to loud music. Throughout her life, Toshiko held a strong spirit of adventure. She was curious, passionate, fearless and determined – in almost everything she did. She loved everything the island had to offer – the ocean, the arts and the people. She loved to entertain and – more than anything to connect. The Kasahara Gabriola Trust that she left is a tremendous legacy to this singular, indomitable person who wanted the best for her island home and community.
