The Details:
Friday, November 8 – The Power of The Pencil Poetry Workshop with poet/activist Sheila Peters at the Poetry Yurt at The Commons from 2-4pm
This interactive workshop will trigger ideas and create a series of group poems on issues you care deeply about. Bring your current cause or burning issue, your indignation and your idealism, your pet peeve or fierce frustration—and together we’ll subject it to the power of the pencil. Limerick or lyrical, satirical or serious, you can speak your mind as you speak out in rhyme.
Suggested donation: an arm-load of firewood to warm the Yurt, a thermos of tea, or snacks to share.
To sign up, email shewa@shaw.ca or phone 247-8482.
Sponsored by Friends of the Library.
Thursday November 14 – CR Avery – Mirror Wrecking Ball Tour 2013 Live at the Gabriola Golf Club
Poetry Gabriola is pleased to present C.R. Avery and Sarah Macdougall – two notorious song-writers with completely different styles – teaming up for one incredible night! Avery & Macdougall are both seasoned road warriors who’ve traveled the world honing the troubadour’s craft. Both artists are renowned for spell-binding solo sets, casting black-magic lyrics with cast-iron melodies. The evening will also feature a rare set of duets.
Doors open at 7:00pm and show at 8:00pm. $10 at the door.
November 21 – Beautiful Poets Launch at the Old Crow Café
7 to 9pm
Third Thursday open mic evening at The Old Crow Café, will be followed by five featured readers – Nanaimo’s newly installed Poet Laureate, Naomi Beth Wakan, Kim Clark from Cedar, Kim Goldberg from Nanaimo, Darryl Knowles from Coombs, and Robert Martens from Abbotsford.
Wakan, Clark, Goldberg and Knowles will read poems from Lipstick Press’ “Beautiful Women anthology”, and Martens will read some new poems from his soon to be published book by Ekstasis.
The café opens at 6:45 pm and will be serving their usual tasty fare. Open mic begins at seven (a sign up sheet will be ready for those wishing to read or email Lisa at altogetherlisa@yahoo.ca before the day) and our featured readers will present from 7:30 until 9 pm.
